Souleymane Keita, new Canadian Champion!

The Canadian Open Championship, played from July 25-28 as part of the Just to Play festival, was fertile in rebounds and the suspense was prolonged until the last movements, or should we say until the last seconds of play. Souleymane Keita was crowned the new champion with his final round win over the defending champion Shang Wong Louicéus, while Gilles Carisse and Andre Leclerc drew. In this game, Gilles Carisse showed remarkable sportsmanship and generosity by offering the draw to his opponent who only had four seconds left on the clock. A win for Gilles would have given him the title. Souleymane Keita, after losing his first round game against Gilles Carisse, came back strong to win his last five games. In a critical phase of his game against Paulvin Simon, Souleymane took over 30 minutes before executing his winning plan. The after-game analysis where he demonstrated his impressive calculations and multiple variants would have been worth an entry fee to see! Paulvin Simon completed the podium with a third place in front of Shang Wong. In the superb decisive game between Shang Wong and Souleymane, the analysis showed that the 41th black move was the only winning one, ... exactly what the new champion had longly calculated.
In the Intermediate class, a new champion was also crowned as Denis Sauvé edged Wilner St-Surin by one point. The latter was the only player to remain undefeated throughout the tournament! Jean-Paul Asselin and Roland Charpentier completed the group of players all made up of Montreal club members.
We take this opportunity to thank Mario Belanger, AQJD President, for his generous financial support, as well as Just for Laughs and the producer of the games festival for allowing us to participate in this great festival. To play the championship in a public place, possibly a first, was very much appreciated and will definitely be renewed. Thank you to all our participants and congratulations to our champions!
